I jumped in here defending .22lr in general and its wider versatility than .223. if you aren't having to travel plus can only afford one gun and still be able to stock ammo for it, I'd say 12ga and a reloading press. if you are on foot, i'd stick with a semi auto .22lr rifle. either way it's still hard to imagine not having a side arm.
