How useless they'd become in an actual survival situation without utilities and a Whole Foods nearby. Can you imagine how much wood you'd have to cut down to heat a 6-8k sq ft house with all that glass?
For me it'd be something built by recycling what's available, solar and wind for power, geothermal for heat and cooling, a mountain stream for water and carp pond, homestead garden for groceries, goats for milk and cheese. Tropical fruit I can get at WF.
