Most commonly people seem to erroneously ascribe it as potent medicine for killing skinwalkers. In reality, a skinwalker is merely a Navajo witch, an individual who is entirely mortal and entirely human. No ash required.
With regards to Wendigos, if you don't live around the Great Lakes region you're likely fine, especially if you don't live somewhere with long, harsh winters. In that case, I wouldn't worry about it.
