I'm sure you're going to plant trees along with your garden.
I had to look up Vermont to see what done you're in and found a couple surprises.
USDA just updated part of southern Vermont to a zone 5b rating (lol global warming isn't real).
I was surprised to see Vermont varies from 3b to 5b.
Plant what you like. As in don't plant peaches if you hate peaches (they won't grow there, just a personal example. They grow extremely well here but I'm not a fan).
I have a type of "formula" for planting trees. Trees must fulfill the requirements of at least 3 out of 9 category's to be planted.
>Shade.
>Habitat (some animals seek out specific trees and a privacy hedge would get a point here)
>Food (either animal or humans, so acorns, apples and blossoms are treated the same)
>Aesthetics.
>Maintenance (this is a +/- category. Pine and sweet gum grow well here with zero assistance but both drop cones/seed pods all over the place so it's a draw for them).
>Compatibility. (+/- again. Nothing grows around black walnuts because of toxins they emit from their roots to inhibit growth of other trees near them)
>Profitability. (People will pay you about $250 an acre to harvest pine straw every year, so it's not just fruits/nuts).
>Overall size/growth rate.
>Personal preference.
