Hydrangea arborescens
Uses: A missionary among the cherokee in the early nineteenth century observed that a syrup or infusion of the root given in teaspoonful doses three times a day relieved excruciating pain from passage of kidney stones. Cherokee used inner bark and leaves as antiseptic; for ulcer, to stop vomiting, treat high blood pressure; externally poulticed for burns, sore or swollen muscles. Root traditionally used for kidney stones, mucus irritation of bladder, bronchial afflictions, stomach problems. The root bark was formerly marketed under the name Gravel Root, referring to its use for kidney stones. Compounds in plant have anti-inflammatory and diuretic activity; inhibit tumor formation.
