The really nice thing about the army mount stem is that it’s designed to be taken apart for storage or cleaning without damage even when the pipe is still warm. With other pipes, that’s asking for a cracked stem and a costly repair job. Plus, if you do happen to fuck up a mouthpiece, army mounts are about the easiest ones to replace. Just get a replacement mouthpiece that’s the right style and shape it to fit with a pocket knife and some sandpaper.
