You shouldn't have any problems in liberal college towns like State College, PA and Ithaca, NY which pride themselves on being gay-friendly and have enough outdoor rec opportunities to keep you occupied. Look at the circled counties on the map. That is where you will want to confine yourself if you want to stay out of trouble.
It's not advisable to hang around in surrounding towns where there is a stark contrast from the above college towns. North of Ithaca in NY's Finger Lakes region is also fine but that's not considered Appalachia or the Southern Tier.
Don't be fooled by PA and NY being blue states. Attitudes are much different outside of big cities like Philly and New York. There are areas where you, your views, and your lifestyle won't be received well unless you keep em to yourself. All the Trump signs, Fuck Biden signs, rebel flags, gadsgen flags, and pickup trucks you will see around here should serve as a warning to people like you.
