Even with GPS they couldn't read a fucking map, so they got lost on maintained trails in a national park.
Orienteering is a skillset that doesn't just involve geolocating with a compass and landmarks.
You can grind those skills with GPS, but most people just expect the phone to do all the thinking for them.
Going into true wilderness without the rest of that skillset is eventually suicidal.
