Now? It's an Olympic sport. There are academies that train children, and slowly weed out the naturally-gifted from the merely hard-working.
It's like anything other sport - you or I could spend a lifetime training in a pool, but we'd never match Michael Phelps - dude is perfectly proportioned, born to move quickly in a pool. If he puts in the same amount of effort, he'll always be better. Climbing is starting to find its Phelp-type athletes.
