Since I am going tubeless on the new bike I will carry a spare folding tire. I always have a tool for every nut and bolt on the bike, but since I am my own mechanic I pay very close attention to mechanical details, so I rarely have a problem in the field. Pic is my typical kit, usually put where I have room.
The main thing is I don't take undue risks while on a long bike-packing trip in the middle of nowhere. I have been known to dismount and walk down grades that I judge to be too steep. A crash and injury to myself and/or my bike, especially with a load of gear, would spoil the trip and put me in a bad situation miles from hospital and bike shop. Since the goal is to be in nature, not thrill seeking, I tend to be a conservative rider.
I travel alone, so I leave detailed plans with my relatives including copies of maps, along with possible alternate plans, plus I sign in at trailheads, so my whereabouts are generally known.
