I think the main difference I'm seeing is likely due to the different grinds, the flat slicy blade that just wants to cut in vs my fatter saber-vex and the pressure applied. Sure you could probably make them curly with the Opinel, but it'd take more time and using lighter slicing strokes vs a quicker push cut, which if you're cold and want a fire is probably what you're going to do since as long as the feather is thin enough to take an open flame easily which yours will do, it's trivial to scrape the stick with the spine to get the fluff to take a spark especially if you have a bit of fatwood.
And from what I can see the Opinel will work just fine for some light carving, slicing and general camp chores, just not chopping and splitting, fuck that, that's what hatchets and axes are for. I'd still be much happier if Opinel made a lockback version. The custom ones that are out there are stupid expensive.
