OP here I am starting to do some remote canyoneering and backpacking and I feel like I need to get serious about my navigation. up until now my early 20's I have just relied on sticking to trails and studying maps carefully beforehand, being careful when going off trail, sun for compass. I am wondering if it is a good idea to get a nice handheld or if there is something I'm missing. I have an old iphone se that I don't trust much so I feel like I would rather drop the $290 on pic related than spend twice as much on a new phone that is of limited use for multiday trips.
Most of the forum posts about uploading free maps to the garmins are pretty old, can you still do that on the new devices? I will be printing maps as a supplement but i think the gps would help me not get lost despite feeling like I could probably go without one if I really wanted to. What do you guys use for navigation for multiday trips?
