After you know the appropriate size, check out local used gear and get something nice for 30-50% of the new price. REI and MEC have a used gear section on their websites, or look on Craigslist/Kijiji.
For backpacking/travelling, I'd go for a 35-50 litre pack, leaning towards the top end if you are just starting out.
