I guess you could start them right now indoors, then plant outside by the end of the month. Every plant needs about one square metre (~10 sqft). I'm in cool summer 8a, but varieties that don't need a very long/hot growing season have worked quite well for me so far (Sugar Baby, Red Star, Crimson Sweet)

From your time stamp you must be around Western Europe too... Germany here, my watermelons worked pretty well in the past two seasons, though I used relatively early fruiting cultivars (Red Star, Crimson Sweet, Sugar Baby) so they didn't go over ~5kg each.
Also I wouldn't start them before early April
