My own strategy may not work for you, but I've learned to sort of enjoy the fear I sometimes get when outside.
Basically, I try to convince myself that I'm excited instead of afraid. The two feelings have similar symptoms, but thinking 'holy shit, I'm on top of the world' is a lot better than 'fuck man, if I move I'm going to fall off and die'.
In your case, it might be turning 'Who knows what's out there, I could get probed' into 'Who knows what's out there, I could be the first to collect evidence of aliens and be famous!'.
I've never had to deal with fears of aliens, but I have spent a couple of pretty scary nights /out/ and made it through them fairly comfortably through this method.
Another way I can be comfortable in total darkness is by directing my imagination. Instead of thinking about lurking predators or murderous hillbillies, I think about the landscape I'm in and zoom out from there, from the whole trip to the land around it to the continent to the Earth to the universe. By that time I've normally either come across something I want to think about more or fallen asleep.
