OP reporting:
I hit the local hardware store today to check prices on pvc and look at my options - 5ft pieces run for 2.50 a piece, and the connector pieces are equally cheap. Didn't buy anything yet, waiting to get measurements.
I think the biggest issue is going to be how do I secure a tarp to the frame, and keep everything manageable enough to set it up and take it down in an organized and efficient way. A big pile of pipes and tarp in the boat isn't going to be fun if it doesn't lay down neatly.
Weight won't be an issue, and the frame construction should be cake. I'm thinking I'll just find suitable connector pieces to screw into the sides of the canoe, which the poles can plug in to.
Any ideas for fastening a tarp, without it ripping? Maybe use a lot of small screws, and glue/bond the tarp to the pipe in the screw area so it doesn't pull and create a tear? Put a couple layers of gorilla tape along where the screws go through the tarp?
This is looking pretty simple - I'd love to make a frame blueprint and how-to for /out/ when it's done.
Pic related - pvc connector pieces will make it easy for everything to fit in to place and create secure angles.
