I grew up on an island off of Lake Michigan. It is a two hour drive to the nearest mall. I had NO IDEA what mainstream society was like until I moved to New York when I was 19. All I knew was what I saw on the internet.
I spent most of my childhood/teenager years exploring the local rural islands, as well as hiking/exploring the mainland. When the lake freezes over in the winter, you can actually hike out to the other islands as well as the mainland.
Now that I live in the city, I have to confess that I prefer city-living over all.
