First off, some background: I was a state licensed pesticide applicator and worked for a company that did commercial (golf courses, campgrounds, etc.) mosquito control for five summers as well as setting traps for the CDC to test for west Nile and EEE.
Mosquitos are attracted to three things: light, heat and carbon dioxide. Not color or smell or whatever. So a fire will not necessarily help you.
Lemongrass, eucalyptus, citrus, garlic, skin cream, cologne, alcohol, citronella or any kind of oil are bullshit.
I've spent enough hours trudging through swamps, wetlands, deep woods and cattail marshes breathing through a respirator as i sprayed permethrin to know nothing but DEET works.
On DEET: yeah it's probably bad for you, but read the damn label. Only apply to your clothes -- never skin.
On clothes: material isn't that important, but wear it loose. If you don't have one already, buy a simple shemagh to cover your face and neck.
If you're hellbent on a mosquito-free campsite pack a small cooler with dry ice and pair it with a lightbulb whether it be a lantern or flashlight and place some distance from your site. Dry ice is a mosquito tractor beam.
