That said gorilla warfare wasn't seen that much in medieval Europe and if there was it was in swamps or mountainous terrain and not forests. When Europeans made it to America to had to learn how to fight in the woods from Indians (see French and Indians war).

Not a huge swath of woodland really. IIRC the 1750s marked the low point of European forest area.
