I think leather boots are in general more durable and more waterproof, especially with an additional goretex lining, however a good pair is more expensive and they are heavier just because of the different material. However, I don't mind paying a bit more for quality products, that will last me many years, if I take care of them and because of that, might actually be cheaper, since I don't have to buy a new pair every season or two. >>1974964said, leather boots might be better is certain environments and for certain uses, for example if you plan to go off trail a lot and know your boots will get banged up in the process and live up north ( where I come from). However, if you plan to stick to trails, use lighter packs and use the boots in hot and/or dry environments, synthetics might be a better choice, since they are more breathable and lighter. I see boots as a tool for getting around and supporting your feet while carrying the weight of a backpack, so I think one should choose the right pair for the job. I don't think there is one pair of boots that work for everything and every environment
