They are only bad if their diet is being made poor via commercialized feed. If the water in your area is warm enough to support tilapia and you do open range aquaculture then they can feed on a natural diet and will be healthier as a result. The listing of, "And Salmon. And Tilapia." from the post you are replying to is referring to farmed fish. Thus, your sentiment of "___ is shit" should really apply to all farmed fish, unless the farmer is actually doing a good job in regard to fish health and diet.

Tilapia are not a junk fish. That's just a social thing you are repeating, like the stigma for carp and catfish. Their nutrition is fine, if they are fed correctly. The biggest problem stems from the food used for farmed fish as well as the antibiotics given to them due to how they are being raised. Farmed fish are in a CAFO environment and come with a massive amount of problems, more so than bovine CAFOs, due to how easily disease spread via water.

The only thing that has ever held me back from doing aquaculture in my pond has been the food source for them and disease prevention/treatment measures.

The point is well argued. Another consideration is trust. Do you trust a company to do the right thing? Track records for companies, from pretty much all of history, doesn't quite sit well with me.

Lawd, don't even get me started. I haven't checked lately, but has the FDA cracked down on their usage for USA fish farms yet? Do they test for things like that for imports?
