Good to see a couple of Aussie faces in this thread, especially Malcolm Douglas. An absolute legend that bloke is.
One of my all time idols is Vic McCristal. It's a name that very few Americans would know (and far too few Australians know of him either, for that matter). Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s he wrote extensively on the Australian outdoors in both books and magazines. His stories of fishing, hunting, top end safaris and adventures across our country were published worldwide, and he did a lot to put Australia 'on the map' in the context of the international sportsman.
His greatest piece of literature 'The Rivers and the Sea' was published in 1974 and took a fantastic 'common sense conservation' stance on the contemporary sport fishing and hunting that was occurring. He understood the important ties to our land that hunting and fishing of all kinds offers us, but could never condone killing for the sake of killing, or worse - killing for the sake of sensationalism or fame.
The influence and importance of his writings on the Australian tourism industry did not go unnoticed, being awarded the title of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) - an honour that has been bestowed on less than 10,000 Australians.
A true Australian outdoorsman, he passed away a couple of years ago but lived a solid 86 adventurous years.
