Hiking boots are so heavy and stiff. I refuse to believe they have any legitimate purpose. Our ancestors hiked 24/7 with just sandals, our anatomy is made to do it without support. It may just take a little bit to strengthen up the muscles in your ankles if you're not used to using them.
I have flexible flatfoot and my feet just look retarded. They look like they should be giving me serious pain and I should have surgery to correct them for looking so fucked up. But I can still walk for a really long time on rough terrain with light Merrell shoes and I've never had a problem.
