I think it depends what environment you go /out/ in. I have a poncho, a tarp, and a MSS bivy and that keeps me very dry. Sometimes I forgo the bivvy entirely. A wool blanket is sometimes brought as well. That system just works for me.

It's a 6.6' by 9.6' foot tarp, how is that too small for you?
