>>797397See the vertical black part on the spool? That's a strip of rubber so it grips the line and you can get away with running braid without the mono backing. If the spool is just smooth aluminum, braid can slip. So if you have a heavy catfish on there and don't spool the braid right, all of the line will just start spinning around the spool before the drag even kicks in. I had it happen to me once when I didn't use a mono backing and didn't put the line on tight enough. Luckily I caught it when I tried to pull some line out against the drag instead of after I had a fish on.
