Also, sometimes I use it as a camera if I didn't bring one of my other (physically larger) cameras. In airplane mode this is simple (wake, swipe down, swipe left); with it off it takes a few minutes before it's ready.
My old dumbphones and my Treo (Palm) would boot in under 30 seconds, so shutting it off was just as easy as turning the radios off (On my Palm, I think it was fewer keypresses to shut it off vs. kick it into airplane mode). Droid takes a few minutes before it's up and ready to go.
Battery use in airplane mode isn't enough for me to worry about. With my regular daily use it's rare it ever falls below 60%. Tethering, or days when I'm in poor signal areas, it might drop to 50%.
