and uh that's all i can think of at the moment but regardless though tents are better. The only pro of the tarp is low profile and extremely cheap.

I supplement the thickness of the foam pad with dry grass or branches, because it's not thick enough for winter/spring/fall use. I need a good inflatable pad tho, or just ditch it and go hammock-pilled.
I also need a good bug net for my tarp.
If it's snowy I use a different tarp pitch with steeper walls.

Get a good tarp and learn to rig it, dude.
Snugpak makes good stuff. The REI silnylon tarps are generally good.
I usually recommend bigger ones - I'm partial to this 9x12. Gives you more space for gear, dogs, etc.

I tried this setup on Saturday night. Middle of one side tied to a tree, opposite side staked into the ground. Kept me warm and dry. I fed the fire when I woke up every few hours.
It rained all night, and the rain turned to snow at about 10:30 the next morning. Water pooled in the back corners of the tarp. Were I to use this setup again, I would fold the back corners underneath the shelter to create a triangular shape.
