Boy do I have a story for y'all. It isn't really /x/-tier spookery since I found an explanation for it but here goes:
>be me
>camping near end of winter with /out/ fren and his SO
>remote place just east of Mt. Hood in Oregon
>close to Indian reservation
>hammock camping for the first time to avoid sleeping on frozen ground
>settle in for the night after fire dies down
>cozy as fuck and ready to fall asleep to the sounds of nature
>darkness falls
>hardly any sounds at all
>spoopy_silence.wav
>hardly sleep
>freeze my ass off when I get up to piss
>1:30 am.
>silence broken by what I can only describe as a "piercing murder scream"
>sounded like a woman being brutally stabbed somewhere in the distance
>was nothing like any animal I've heard before
>like completely human
>not so cozy now
>feel super exposed in hammock like my ass is gonna get bit any second
>3 screams later the sound stops
>listen carefully for a solid 5 minutes
>right when I'm about to relax it returns with a vengeance
>louder and closer
>just over the hill
>oh god oh fuck
>panic
>ditch hammock and grab .357 revolver from my pack
>think of skinwalkers
>fumble in the darkness for the remains of the fire
>unload hollowpoints and fill the tips with wood ash
>hysterical at this point but don't want to spook the camp
>back up to a tree and cock hammer
>gun pointed in direction of the sound
>damn near hyperventilating and considering firing a warning shot
>every pine needle hitting the ground made me jump
>lose my shit for around 20 minutes before it seems all clear
>holster gun and pop into fren's tent
>"you cold too anon?"
>"yeh"
>we all sardined in the tent that night
>packed up and left the next day
>had to clean the fuck out of my gun when I got home
After getting back to civilization I Googled: "blood-curdling scream in the woods animal?" Led to a NatGeo article and had a video with vixen fox calls. Perfectly matched the sound I heard. I felt really retarded after that.
