You plant "too many" in one place then after the plants are grown up enough to make sure they are out of the danger zone of instant death you can select ones to keep and ones to snip off. That will allow more room for the ones that remain. If this isn't done, they all suffer. You can google up spacing for the species and cultivar of plant you are growing to find the optimal spacing.
