An older quality steel road bike can be good too, if it has rack mounts, but the gearing won't really be low enough, and the wheels won't be as strong as a rigid mtb (also narrower tires means higher chance of damaging a wheel, the no 1 thing to go wrong with a loaded bike). A used touring bike if you're lucky.
