I went fishing at a river near my house today for bass and pike, but I got side-tracked because there's a canal that runs parallel to the river that's absolutely full of 24" channel catfish (I live in RI and freshwater fish usually aren't that big here). What's the best kind of bait for those guys? I've only caught bottom feeding catfish in deeper ponds before. Here's a picture of one, though it's really zoomed in so it looks small.
Also, I'm heading to Lake Wononscopomuc in CT in a couple weeks and it's supposed to have a lot of bass, pickerel, perch and trout. I usually use texas rigged worms, some rooster tails, storm lures and crankbait. What other kinds of lures should I grab before heading out there, and how do you guys know what to used based on conditions and visibility/depth in the water? I usually just cycle through things till something hits.
