Hiking with a sword is annoying as if you're wearing it on your hip it tends to slap when you move faster than a gentle walk.
if it's short enough to wear bum dagger style it gets in the way of your pack so you have to wear a bedroll and sausage sack.
On the rare occasions I have to carry my sword hiking I usualy put it in its scabbard with a peace knot and strap to the side of my pack.
Bonus points for singing Unser leibe Frau as you go along though.
