this comes from times when metal edge tools were expensive and in short supply, thus loaning could lead to conflict with the person you loaned it to.
as for abuse, I have everyday knife, working knife so to say, a cheap mora one. that one is abused to no end. then I have survival Mora2000 early model. when in field - using it to the max, when back home - sharpened and cared for. serves me since 2001.
and then I have made this recently, and while it is meant as survival knife, it still just hangs on the wall for now.
