Learn how to sew and make your own stuff. It really isn't that hard, but it is much, much cheaper than buying finished products.
Stuff that are trivial to do on your own:
>hammocks (you can even make one without sewing!)
>alcohol stoves and hobostoves (I really like ones with a wick, as they don't need priming)
>cozy for your pot that will keep it warm/cold (once I run out of fuel while cooking my rice. But since I had that cozy my rice stayed warm enough to finish cooking without my stove)
Still easy:
>tarps
>bags/stuff sacks
>beef jerky, hardtack and other food items (not really gear, but you can save so much money by making it on your own, that it's still worth mentioning)
>bugnet for a hammock that doesn't have one
Slightly harder:
>tents
>compression bags
Still perfectly doable on your own, but perhaps not something you should start with:
>backpacks, pic related
>sleeping bags/quilts
>clothes (like a nice windshell)
>knifes
