For the most part bears are little shits and humans scare them to death unless they're with cubs. The only downside is bears that has gotten use to humans feeding them beside the road or in their backyards. Those bears won't really run away until you make loud sounds .
I only hang my food if I'm away from camp or if I'm in a high human area like red river gorge since humans may be feeding them.
Just make sounds while you're innawoods, pack bear spray or a gun, and a fire should keep them away.
