Also, one last thing: print out a map of the route you plan to take, especially if there's a network of trails and not just a simple out/back. My method is to find a good view on AllTrails' online map, use the Print Screen button to take a screenshot, paste that into a photo editor, crop it, increase the contrast and brightness so it will be easier to see, and then print a couple copies. Something like pic related.
