Never ever believe easy generalizations about IDing mushrooms---there are more exceptions to rules like this than there are species that meet the criteria. Moreover, species composition varies great from place to place and even if these generalization are true for his area (spoiler alert: they're not), they may not be for yours. Don't ever forget that you are considering a hobby that can kill if you fuck up hard enough.
Look for a local club or society. That's your best bet. Most of the time it's older folks who are super laid back and happy to teach. Just don't be surprised if most of them only know edibles well.
