It's quite small because most of it was logged in the late 1800's/early 1900's, which caused the moss understory to dry into peat. The trains carrying the logs caused sparks which ignited the peat and the resulting fire was so bad that it didn't get put out till the snows came in November. A writer who went down there to report on the blaze said it was so bright that he could read the newspaper on his porch by the light of the fire burning in the next valley over.
