Learn everything you can online and through books, learn through trial and error and (if you can) try getting a mentor. One of the best ways to learn beekeeping is to find someone who's been doing it for a while and become friends with them, helping them out with their hives and volunteering to work with them whenever you can. Your bees shouldn't die if you prep them well enough and treat for Varroa/SHB early in the season.
