I used to take one of these backpacking mandolins

It's fun to fuck around with if you are decent on a real mandolin, but it doesn't have a very good tone/project much sound. I get that they are trying to make it small and able to be carried around without a case, but I'd sacrifice space for a bigger body. I sort of want to build a better backpacking mandolin but I have no access to a shop until summer.
