I have a hard time imagining them having anything to do with this treehouse. They're a straight up hippy cult but if it was them there would have been religious literature mixed in with the rest of the library that used to be up there.
Whoever built and occupied the treehouse was definitely a hippy of some sort, the huge library of hippy literature and mandolin songbooks he had up there was more than enough evidence.
