i have an old kelty external frame backpack that's very similar to pic related. it's make out of raw nylon and as a result is completely non-waterproof. i want to remove it from the frame, machine wash it, and completely soak it in dissolved silicone (DIY silnylon). kinda worried about some of the hardware, especially the zippers (aluminum) and the plastic cord stoppers (i believe they're ABS). two questions:
>will mineral spirits harm the structural integrity of the plastic in any way? if so, what solvent should i be using? everclear is an expensive option that comes to mind
>the zipper teeth are pretty sharp, but will the silicone gum them up to the point of unusability? i should be able to work the zippers a few times after it's dry to remove and interfering silicone, right?
>bonus question: what's the best way to dry it, put it back on the frame or hang it as tight as i can? if silicone drips onto the frame, i can just polish it off with fine steel wool, correct?
