One of the books in my lineup discusses what was a short-lived emerging movement around the 70s called "appropriate technology." One of the ideas that seems to have been lost with this emergence is that there is no singular alternative energy form that will replace fossil fuels simply because none of the alternative energies can be as universally applied. Instead, "appropriate technology" proposes that an area will have to be assessed for a variety of factors including various geographic and climatological characteristics to determine what would be a good assortment of technologies to meet the demand of the area.
I personally find wind turbines rather relaxing to look at, and like the idea. But I agree with the sentiment of appropriate technology that there is no one alternative energy source that is THE wave of the future. It requires a thoughtful, informed, multi-faceted approach tailored to the area you are trying to supply.
I also like the idea of alternative energy collectors as a form of art, like this turbine tree.
