So when I go backpacking I've historically used either one set of heavy socks by themselves or a thin liner under a heavy sock. Both have worked fine, a few blisters here and there but nothing incapacitating or intolerable. Now, I'm in the market for a new pair of boots, and I happened across a NOLS recommendation that you wear two pairs of heavy wool socks for extended off-trail travel. I'd like to have a firm idea of what socks I'll be using in order to size the boots appropriately. So has anyone ever tried two layers of heavy wool socks? How does it compare to a light liner and a heavy wool sock, or a heavy wool sock by itself?
Attached, pic of socks.
