Hockey and football helmets can take multiple hits, and usually get "recertified" through an inspection process annually. If it's cracked or otherwise visually damaged it should be discarded. Sounds like skateboard helmets are similar (although they're cheap enough it's probably worth just replacing it every year or two).
Some people get lucky more often than others. I don't ride without one (and a bunch of other gear).
