>>2421891It always depends where you live, but starting with 40 acres... I think it's doable. You'll need at least 2.5 acre for one, then a lot of hay, lot of water and some oat. Horse is everyday work, it means no holiday. Car can be parked in garage and forgotten for months, but horse not.
Since horse is an animal, it can get sick. Cheap horses may have serious health problems. Then it gets really expensive. I know a woman who sold her car to pay the vets and her horse died anyway.
Well behaved horse for riding is a lot of work too, but you need to master maintenance first. As you asked - riding a horse while drunk is illegal the same as riding bicycle drunk.
I rode horses for 14 years in a riding club. I did a week long trips with them, show jumping, training... I quit this spring. Relationships in the club went downhill in last 2 years. Now the prices of everything almost doubled, so I can't afford it anymore. Even if it was hard and sometimes painful, it was fun.
