one of the things that set man apart from the animals was our ability to tame nature, not just be a part of it. to turn bark into shoes, stone into knives, to bend animals to our whims.
Also, you are forgetting that one form of land has been almost completely eradicated: plains. vast fields of grass stretched for hundreds of miles. now all tilled into farm land.
The outdoors we know today are the parts that were so rocky/mountainous/forested/shitty that no one could farm on them.
