The adirondacks have mountains with large exposed faces (colden, gothics, giant mountain) like what you find in the laurentians in quebec, while the whites look more other mountains you'd find in the appalachians.
Look at a map of lakes in the whites vs the adirondacks. The adirondacks has many more lakes, and much larger ones too, just like what you'd find in northern ontario/manitoba/saskatchewan.
Even driving through the road cuts you'll see they're drastically different
