I find a lot of it also brings in the "Pants vs Shorts" debate. Shorts and shoes are fine on a trail, might even be more comfy. But the moment you start walking through brush, over deadfall and uneven terrain, through thistle and poison ivy, people learn real quick why pants and boots are worn. Where I hike and camp there aren't any trails, and right now it's covered in poison ivy and thistle. Lots of fallen trees as well. Boots offer a more solid support, and offer more protection. Just my perspective.
