Hunting belts are awesome, you can fit pretty much everything except clothes and sleeping equipment in them. They prevent you from using very large backpacks though.
I use this one so my back doesn't get sweaty because of a backpack - holds everything one might need during one day innawoods and costs like 10 USD.
As for the stuff that may or may not fit into those two tiny pouches:
- Fire making tools (choose what you want)
- Space blanket
- Compass and a folded map
- Small water filter (if it fits)
- Diarrhea medicine
- As much thread or rope as you can fit in there + needles
